Dr John den Boer’s Contributions to Science
My contributions to science are in the area of the development and prevention of digital cognitive intervention treatment therapies for cognitive and functional decline related to dementia.
Therapies for Cognitive and Functional Decline Related to Dementia
Each year approximately 600,000 people in the U.S. alone are diagnosed with dementia, with approximately 6 million cases of dementia in the U.S. reported each year. Dementia is a tragic, progressive condition with many causes that all lead to cortical atrophy (loss of brain cells). This shrinking of the brain takes from individuals what they value most: independence, dignity, and quality of life. Not only does it gradually reduce one’s understanding of the world and ability to function, but it also leads to a significant financial burden in age-related care costs for the individual and his/her family.
Dr John den Boer’s contribution to the science of therapies for cognitive and functional decline related to dementia is documented in the following four papers:
- DenBoer, John W. & Khlasa, Dharma Singh (in press). Strategic Memory Alzhemer’s Rehabilitation Training (SMART): Cognitive Intervention for Amnestic-type Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). Grant: Alzheimer’s Research Prevention Foundation (ARPF).
- DenBoer, John W. & Khlasa, Dharma Singh (in press). Strategic Memory Alzheimers Rehabilitation Training (SMART) Memory Program: Temporary Improvement for MCI/VCI Via Systematic Novel Cognitive Exercise. Grant: Alzheimer’s Research Prevention Foundation (ARPF).
- DenBoer, John W. (in press). Systematic Review of Cognitive Intervention for Mild Cognitive Impairment.
- DenBoer, J.W. (in press). Current Status of Cognitive Intervention in Dementia. Invited Paper for Applied Neuropsychology: Adult.
- DenBoer, J.W., & Hall, S. (manuscript under review). Memory for Complex Pictures: Development and validation of a digital test of memory malingering. Invited paper for Archives of Clinical Neuropsychology.
- Brewer, J., & DenBoer, J.W. (manuscript under review). Neuropsychological assessment of a patient with adult-onset Moya-Moya disease with prodromal psychosis.
